Several surveys conducted for the occasion of the upcoming International Mother’s Day suggested that 85% of the new mothers are sleep deprived with over 50% of them citing bed-sharing with the infant to be the cause of disturbed sleep. The survey was conducted in four major metro cities i.e., Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. According to the survey, 90% of the new mothers feel tired and cranky at the end of the day and 75% of them stated that they are not able to manage their daily chores. However, eight hours of sleep at night is necessary for an adult for normal body functioning.

Contrary to the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Canadian Pediatric Society guidelines, 76% of the mothers stated that they felt bed-sharing was safer for their child. The established guidelines mandate a separate firm mattress in the same room as the parents. The survey highlighted the necessity of a separate mattress for sound sleep for the parent, better back support, and the development of the baby.

Shruti Malani, Founder of Century mattress stated that the survey was aimed to demonstrate that sleep deprivation and the overwhelming situation can cause fatigue and depression in some cases.
